I’d like to report on two pieces of legislation I’ve introduced in Congress. As a member of the Health Subcommittee of the House Veterans’ Affairs Committee, I’ve had the privilege of working to provide the best health care not just for our veterans but also for their families, who join in this incredible sacrifice for our country. To that end, I’ve introduced a bill called the Health Care for Family Care Givers Act of 2009, which would provide medical care for family members who act as the primary caregivers for severely disabled veterans.

Today, Congressman Tom Perriello introduced legislation in the House that would start the process of bringing the National D-Day Memorial in Bedford, Virginia under the supervision of the National Park Service. The legislation was written in consultation with the Memorial, which recently reported that it does not have enough money to sustain operations.

Our brave veterans wore the uniform of this country to defend our freedoms, and they deserve nothing less than world-class healthcare when they return. But for veterans in rural communities, getting the health care they deserve may require them to drive long distances, miss days of work, or leave a child or spouse behind. Because I serve on the Health Subcommittee of the Committee on Veterans Affairs, I’m always seeking ways to improve healthcare delivery for our veterans. One of my priorities is to close the gap between our veterans and the health care they have earned.

Imagine being a black Army soldier serving your country in the jungles of Vietnam knowing that when you return to the states, your life and culture will be in complete upheaval because of the Civil Rights Movement. Image being a Marine lying on a canvas bunk on a troopship with thousands of young men on a three-week journey to Vietnam. Image being shot down over Vietnam in 1966 and being a prisoner of war for seven years.

On this Memorial Day, I write to pay tribute to all those who have fallen in defense of our country. From Appomattox Courthouse to the National D-Day Memorial, the veterans of Central and Southern Virginia stand as a testament to the virtues of sacrifice and patriotism. We have prospered as a nation because brave men and women of every generation have answered the call to arms and made the ultimate sacrifice for our great Nation.
