An oversized tractor trailer carrying forging press equipment is scheduled to make three trips between Newport News and Martinsville (approximately 300 miles in each direction) starting Monday. The operators will travel along the designated routes between 6:30 p.m. and 6:30 a.m. and, if necessary, move to pre-determined stops along the route. Each trip is expected to take two to three days depending on weather and other unexpected conditions. Motorists traveling near the transport may experience delays.

As of July 1, 2009, the Alliance for Families and Children will become “The Family Alliance.” The name change is the result of a combined effort by the Board of Directors and staff members, as a part of 100th Anniversary celebrations for this non-profit, human service agency.

A “Blog-Off”” competition will be held on May 22nd at The Muse Coffee in Wyndhurst at 9:00 a.m. Local business networking group, Friday 2.0, has put together a panel of four judges to evaluate the main criteria that makes an effective blog. Submission deadline is May 15th.

Sweet Briar College’s Book Shop Cafe will undergo a renovation during the winter break, emerging when students return to campus in mid-January as Daisy’s Cafe, an upscale coffee shop named for the daughter of College founder Indiana Fletcher Williams.

In 2001, VDOT studied and developed four potential options for connecting the Route 29 Bypass with the Route 460 limited access facility west of this corridor. Each option had considerable impact to the surrounding community and each was too costly (ranging from approx. $50-70 million in 2001 dollars for each alternative) to build.

Citizens will have an opportunity to informally review, discuss and provide input on a proposal to convert a portion of Route 460/29 to a limited access facility during a meeting on Thursday, December 11, 2008, between 3:30 and 7:00 p.m. at the auditorium of the Virginia Department of Transportation’s Lynchburg Office on Route 501 (Campbell Avenue) in Lynchburg.
