GET!DOWNTOWN Will Close Lynchburg Streets on 11 September
On the night of 11 September 2009, Downtown Lynchburg will come alive like never before. As a way to say “Welcome Back” and “Welcome To” Lynchburg to students attending the area’s 6 Colleges/Universities, this event is something that is planned to become an annual event.
Oversized Loads to Affect Virginia Travel in July
An oversized tractor trailer carrying forging press equipment is scheduled to make three trips between Newport News and Martinsville (approximately 300 miles in each direction) starting Monday. The operators will travel along the designated routes between 6:30 p.m. and 6:30 a.m. and, if necessary, move to pre-determined stops along the route. Each trip is expected to take two to three days depending on weather and other unexpected conditions. Motorists traveling near the transport may experience delays.
100-Year History of the Reorganized Family Alliance
As of July 1, 2009, the Alliance for Families and Children will become “The Family Alliance.” The name change is the result of a combined effort by the Board of Directors and staff members, as a part of 100th Anniversary celebrations for this non-profit, human service agency.

A “Blog-Off”” competition will be held on May 22nd at The Muse Coffee in Wyndhurst at 9:00 a.m. Local business networking group, Friday 2.0, has put together a panel of four judges to evaluate the main criteria that makes an effective blog. Submission deadline is May 15th.

Virginia National Guard to support 56th Presidential Inauguration
More than 500 Virginia National Guard Soldiers will be on duty supporting the 56th Presidential Inauguration on Jan. 20 by assisting federal, state and local agencies with security, communications, traffic control and other general support requirements.
Highway Contract Awarded
E. C. Pace Company, Inc. of Roanoke, VA was awarded a $363,041.00 contract for the replacement and rehabilitation of pipe at 21 locations in the Lynchburg District of the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT).
Daisy’s Cafe, ‘Sweet Briar Roast’ Debut Jan. 22
Sweet Briar College’s Book Shop Cafe will undergo a renovation during the winter break, emerging when students return to campus in mid-January as Daisy’s Cafe, an upscale coffee shop named for the daughter of College founder Indiana Fletcher Williams.
Comments Remain Open for 460/29 VDOT Options
In 2001, VDOT studied and developed four potential options for connecting the Route 29 Bypass with the Route 460 limited access facility west of this corridor. Each option had considerable impact to the surrounding community and each was too costly (ranging from approx. $50-70 million in 2001 dollars for each alternative) to build.

460/29 Comment Period Begins
Citizens will have an opportunity to informally review, discuss and provide input on a proposal to convert a portion of Route 460/29 to a limited access facility during a meeting on Thursday, December 11, 2008, between 3:30 and 7:00 p.m. at the auditorium of the Virginia Department of Transportation’s Lynchburg Office on Route 501 (Campbell Avenue) in Lynchburg.
