Poet Janet Sylvester Presents Lecture
Poet Janet Sylvester, Thornton Writer-in-Residence at Lynchburg College, will read from her work February, 25 at 7:30 p.m. in the Alumni House Lounge. A reception and book signing will follow.
The Big Read in Vriginia Expands Services
Recording for the Blind & Dyslexic Regional Unit of the Upper Southeast (RFB&D) is pleased to announce that it has formed a unique partnership with the Virginia Foundation Center for the Book to participate in “The Big Read in Virginia,” a statewide reading program. This partnership will allow RFB&D eligible students and non-students alike who struggle with reading due to print disabilities to have access to the unabridged audiobook versions – on CD or via download – of this year’s Big Read in Virginia book selections.
Library of Virginia Literary Awards
The Library of Virginia Literary Awards are given annually to outstanding Virginia authors in the areas of fiction, nonfiction, and poetry. Past winners include Deborah Eisenberg, Donald McCaig, Suzanne Lebsock, Carrie Brown, Charles Wright, Richard Bausch, Ruth Stone, Melvin Patrick Ely and Edward P. Jones. This is a juried award, and winners in each category receive a $3,500 prize and engraved crystal book. The Carole Weinstein Prize in Poetry is also awarded at the event. This award, founded in 2005, is given each year to a poet with strong connections to central Virginia. The $10,000 annual prize recognizes significant recent contribution to the art of poetry and is awarded on the basis of a range of achievements in the field of poetry.
