Opposition to health care reform often use the Canadian health care system as a means to criticize everything from the public option to cancer treatments as they continue to stonewall reform. While American media has preferred to cover dissent at town halls rather than pursue the truth, two brothers took their video camera to Canada to interview Canadians about their health care system.

American pharmaceutical giant Pfizer Inc. and its subsidiary Pharmacia & Upjohn Company Inc. (hereinafter together “Pfizer”) have agreed to pay $2.3 billion, the largest health care fraud settlement in the history of the Department of Justice, to resolve criminal and civil liability arising from the illegal promotion of certain pharmaceutical products, the Justice Department announced.

It’s been quite an August. Over the course of the month, I’ve had the privilege of holding 21 town hall meetings throughout the 5th District – more than any other Member of Congress in the country. In total, nearly 5,000 people participated and the average length of each meeting was three hours. The topic of healthcare was definitely the number one concern, although people also brought up education, jobs, the federal deficit, and our nation’s energy policy.

Last night in northern Virginia, Representative James Moran and Governor Howard Dean held a town hall meeting on health care that was attended by thousands of people. Anti-abortion extremist Randall Terry, the founder of Operation Rescue, had announced prior to the event that he would be there to disrupt it by accusing President Obama of “killing Granny and babies.” Velvet Revolution was there with cameras.

Governor Timothy M. Kaine today applauded the launch of the United We Serve initiative, a national effort by the Obama administration to promote and sustain community involvement. To kick off the initiative in Virginia, First Lady Anne Holton and Deputy Secretary of Natural Resources Nikki Rovner joined U.S. Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar at the Big Meadows area of Shenandoah National Park to perform invasive weed removal. Governor Kaine will participate in a number of programs throughout the summer as part of the initiative.

Congressman Tom Perriello today voted in favor of the bipartisan State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) Reauthorization bill, which will provide health care coverage for 11 million children (preserving coverage for the 7 million children currently covered by SCHIP and extending coverage to 4 million uninsured children who are currently eligible for, but not enrolled in, SCHIP and Medicaid). Forty Republicans voted for the bill.
