The Evergreen Music Festival took place on Saturday, June 13 at White Oak Farm in Evergreen, VA, just a couple miles outside of the town of Appomattox, from 11:00 am to 7:00 pm. It was cloudy in the morning, but the rain held off until after the festival was over. This year, there was a second “Artist Stage” for a number of local acts including Broda and Petre Liska (shown above). A number of venders also set up booths, including Nina Eagle. The proceeds to this year’s festival will be donated to Meals on Wheels of Farmville, VA.

The Waterworks Players next production will be the comedy-drama “Steel Magnolias” by Robert Harling. Auditions will be held at 7:30 pm on Sunday and Monday, June 21st & 22nd at the Waterworks Theater In Farmville.

“What we’ve got here is failure to communicate.” Released in 1967, Cool Hand Luke (PG) is one of the highlights of Paul Newman’s illustrious career as an actor. Gritty, sweaty, and harsh, the film depicts life in a Florida prison camp. But as hot as it is on the chain gang, Newman’s Luke is cool under pressure and determined to not let his will get broken.

The Downtown Film Series committee announces the twelfth season of the award-winning Stars Under The Stars. Since 1997, the Series has brought timeless motion pictures back to the big screen for the Farmville and surrounding communities. Spanning all film eras and genres, the movies are presented in the grassy outdoor venue of the Downtown Crute Stage and have included classics such as Rear Window, The Adventures of Robin Hood, West Side Story, Gone With The Wind, and many more.

If you’re a homebody like me, a night on the town means finding a musical or theatrical event in Appomattox proper, and then grabbing a late night supper at the Huddle House. It’s not a bad thing, per se, because between Baine’s Books & Coffee, Friday Cheerz, and Appomattox Courthouse Theatre, there’s usually something worth getting dressed up and out of the house for.

Today, Congressman Tom Perriello announced that he has hired a full-time staffer, Mr. Joe Topham, to manage his district office in Farmville. Mr. Topham’s first order of business will be securing the space for Congressman Perriello’s full-time, permanent office in Farmville.

Following news of the November 27th death of ICE detainee Guido Newborough, groups opposing plans to build a new immigrant detention center in Farmville will hold a vigil and protest. The group will gather at 3:30 pm on Sunday, December 7, 2008 outside the Piedmont Regional Jail, where Newborough had been held from February of last year until his death Thanksgiving weekend.

The Bum Chums, a service-oriented tap club at Sweet Briar College, are holding their annual Bum Chum Bazaar from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 13 in Josey Dining Room. The bazaar raises money for their $1,000 scholarship, which benefits a Sweet Briar student, as well as other charities.
