Christmas
A Sign of Spring
On Friday afternoon the first sign of spring showed its pretty little head and most welcome it was too. No, it wasn’t a flock of hungry robins feasting on earthworms or anything in bloom. It was the arrival of spring gardening stuff at the Farmville Voldemart (A.K.A. WalMart)!
We’ve Turned the Corner
By the time the Vernal Equinox rolls around in March, day and night will be of equal length. I have always considered the Solstice to be the true advent of spring. After all, when the sun comes back it is certainly cause for excitement and celebration. Most of our Christmas traditions are based on ancient rituals revolving around the return of the sun, chief among them being all the greenery we bring indoors at this time of year.

Christmas in Appomattox Photos
Ronnie Lankford spent the day in downtown Appomattox last Saturday, December 6. He froze, talked about the cold weather, warmed up at Baine’s Books, and snapped photos whenever possible. The following images may help some of you remember how good that hot apple cider tasted, how great the music sounded, and how wonderful the shops looked this year. Read Ronnie’s write-up about the day and view more photos, and enjoy your Christmas of 2008!
Celebrating Christmas: Downtown Appomattox & the Holiday Season
Luckily, downtown Appomattox neatly solved this time-strapped holiday dilemma on Sunday by making it easy to 1) enjoy festivities, 2) talk to Santa, and 3) eat and buy stuff all at the same time. While the Christmas Parade (4:00 p.m.) and the Community of Candles (5:00 p.m.) were billed as the primary activities of the afternoon, there was a great deal more to do for those who arrived earlier.
The Lions Christmas Ship Delivers Holiday Cheer
In certain parts of the world, Santa arrives by sleigh, slides down chimneys or walks through front doors. But for people living in small island communities in the Pacific Northwest, Santa pulls in by ship the Christmas ship filled with lions, laughter and loads of holiday cheer. Watch this video, produced by the Lions Club, to see how Santa may arrive in different parts of the world this year!
