Singer and songwriter Brenda Broda was at Baine’s Books and Coffee Saturday night and performed to an appreciative audience. Her unique style – she calls it “Acoustic Americana” – and throaty voice are both easy on the ears.

Acoustic Eidolon, consisting of Hanna Alkire on cello and Joe Scott on guitar and double neck gitjo, performed at Baine’s Books and Coffee on Wednesday, May 14. This was the inaugural concert on the newly opened third floor of Baine’s and proved to be a big success. Acoustic Eidolon’s performance was co-sponsored by Baine’s Books and Coffee and Rockcliffe Farm Retreat and Lodge.

As I arrive at Baine’s Books and Coffee around 7:30 on a Saturday evening, the sun is only beginning to set. Even though it’s late spring, it’s been fairly cool all day. Inside, it’s warmer, and an early crowd has gathered to see multiple-instrumentalist and singer Jason Ring perform. I take a seat in the back of the room, listening as Ring delivers a finger picked version of “Deep River Blues” that would make Doc Watson proud.

Kristin Freshwater, her brother Justin, and Kat Antis recently filmed a short documentary entitled, “Looking In.” The film details the evening routine of two young women living, working, and creating in Appomattox, Virginia.

The Longwood Center for the Visual Arts presented their thirteenth annual Community Achievement in the Arts Awards, Saturday evening, April 19, 2008, in Farmville, Virginia. Baine’s Books and Coffee, a landmark Appomattox business located on Main Street, was recipient of the Business Award. Bryan Baine and his wife Debbie were present to accept the honor.
