Social Media Seminar 2009: Workshops

Social Media Seminar Main Page | Workshops

Do you wonder why we ask about your interests when you sign up for this seminar? While the morning lessons and talk deal with generalities and motivations, the afternoon sessions will help you learn how to use social media tools for your specific interest(s). Although the ethics, practices and goals for social media use are the same across the board, we want to help you learn some tips and tricks for using social media in specific circumstances.

For instance, if you’re involved with a non-profit group you can join a group led by Jennifer Mills (see below) to learn more about how to use Twitter or Facebook or other applications to connect with members and to gain new volunteers. If you want to learn more about iReporting or blogging, Linda Goin will help you learn how to apply social media tools for this venue. The groups, listed below, can help you decide where you want to focus.

You won’t be “stuck” in these groups during the afternoon sessions, as you can move to another group following the afternoon break. However, to keep the groups at a manageable size so you get the most from the instructors, we ask that you let us know if you have one or two interests from the following list:

  • Business owners can learn how to communicate with customers efficiently and build a business quickly, both locally and internationally if needed.
  • Educators can learn how to build an efficient network with students as well as with other faculty members in higher education.
  • Politicians can learn how to connect with their constituents.
  • Religious leaders can learn how to build rapport with their congregations.
  • Non-profit organizations organizations can learn how ’cause marketing’ can build donations and gain new volunteers.
  • Residents and employees can learn how to stay on top of events and news at work and in the community to become more involved with local activities.
  • iReporters or bloggers can learn how to share news and information about events with local communities through social networking.
