Editor’s Note: We’ve ceased publishing press releases from the Governor’s and Lt. Governor’s campaigns, simply because the press releases have been irrelevant and have not focused on any important Virginia issues. However, we were stunned to hear about McDonnell’s graduate thesis, a paper that showed a singularly hostile tone and a social agenda against working women, unwed mothers and gay individuals that seems to have lingered in his current philosophy (The PilotOnline agrees and expands on the issue).

The gubernatorial campaign of Bob McDonnell offered to compromise today with the campaign of Creigh Deeds regarding the general election debate schedule.
Creigh Deeds on McDonnell Campaign’s ‘Welfare State’
Bob McDonnell’s campaign thinks Virginians would rather be on welfare than work. A top McDonnell surrogate and Republican Party of Virginia Chairman Pat Mullins said in Monterey last week that the reason there isn’t more employment in the area is that people “preferred to be on welfare.”
Obama and Deeds at Rally for Virginia Event
President Obama plans to be in McLean, Virginia on August 6 to stump for Creigh Deeds at the Rally for Virginia event. Obama was the first Democrat to carry Virginia in a presidential election in 44 years, and the governor’s race is seeking to continue that Democratic support. Deeds is running against Republican Bob McDonnell, the former attorney general.
Bolling Joins McDonnell Announce Comprehensive Statewide Transportation Plan
Three days ago, Lieutenant Governor Bill Bolling joined Republican gubernatorial nominee and former Attorney General Bob McDonnell to announce a comprehensive plan to build a transportation system for the 21st century. McDonnell and Bolling were also joined by Congressman Frank Wolf and former Congressman Tom Davis. The text of the Lieutenant Governor’s remarks as prepared is below.
McDonnell Offers 11th Hour Support for Rest Stops
One day before Virginia begins to shutter eighteen safety rest stops and one welcome center statewide, Bob McDonnell, Republican gubernatorial nominee and former Attorney General of Virginia, announced his support for prompt, proactive and creative measures to keep the facilities open. McDonnell further pledged that if the rest stops are closed, he will open them back up within 90 days of taking office as governor in January 2010. Eighteen interstate-highway safety rest areas are set to close tomorrow, and the Interstate 66 West Welcome Center at Manassas will close on September 16th, due to budget choices made by the Kaine administration.

Bob McDonnell, Republican gubernatorial nominee and former Attorney General of Virginia, and Bill Bolling, Lieutenant Governor of Virginia, today announced broad initiatives to help create new jobs in the Commonwealth in the years ahead.
McDonnell Statement on Teacher Performance Pay
United States Secretary of Education Arne Duncan appeared at the National Education Association’s annual convention today to promote the Obama Administration’s support of performance pay for teachers. As reported by The Los Angeles Times, Duncan told the audience, “It’s not enough to focus only on issues like job security, tenure, compensation, and evaluation, you must become full partners and leaders in education reform, you must be willing to change.”
AFSCME Makes $500,000 Donation to Deeds
Creigh Deeds has received a $500,000 donation from the powerful national union AFSCME, the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees. This donation is the largest single donation to the Deeds campaign to date. The donation comes on the heels of Deeds receiving $100,000 from the SEIU, a national union supporting the elimination of Virginia’s Right to Work law.
