Winter sport enthusiasts have patiently polished up their skis and snowboards, awaiting the debut of Liberty University’s year-round ski slope. After nearly a year of anticipation, the wait is over. On Aug. 29, LU will hold a grand opening ceremony for the Liberty Mountain Snowflex Centre.

Governor Timothy M. Kaine is joining Norfolk Southern Railway CEO Wick Moorman today to sign a Memorandum of Understanding between Virginia and Norfolk Southern Railway for the construction of infrastructure improvements to support new freight and passenger service to the Lynchburg region.

Staff with the Lynchburg District of the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has seen a recent increase in the number of illegal signs in VDOT right of way and is taking the necessary legal steps to address the issue.

Nearly 700 students contributed 48,000 hours of community service in 2007-08 to earn Lynchburg College a place on the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for 2008.

Beginning in fall 2009, Lynchburg College will launch a new Master of Science in Nursing for students who have graduated from accredited baccalaureate nursing programs with current unrestricted nursing licenses.

The indoor climbing rage that has spread rapidly across the country has hit Lynchburg. Rise Up Climbing, led by climbing entrepreneur Dan Hague, has completed renovating a downtown building into a climbing wonderland. The new gym opened on September 27, 2008.

Sweet Briar College’s Book Shop Cafe will undergo a renovation during the winter break, emerging when students return to campus in mid-January as Daisy’s Cafe, an upscale coffee shop named for the daughter of College founder Indiana Fletcher Williams.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for portions of the commonwealth, including Amherst County and crews with the Lynchburg District of the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) are monitoring conditions and planning ahead. Rain may become mixed with sleet and freezing rain this evening. While little accumulation is expected, a light coating of ice could occur on elevated surfaces, in the deeper valleys and in other areas.

In 2001, VDOT studied and developed four potential options for connecting the Route 29 Bypass with the Route 460 limited access facility west of this corridor. Each option had considerable impact to the surrounding community and each was too costly (ranging from approx. $50-70 million in 2001 dollars for each alternative) to build.

Citizens will have an opportunity to informally review, discuss and provide input on a proposal to convert a portion of Route 460/29 to a limited access facility during a meeting on Thursday, December 11, 2008, between 3:30 and 7:00 p.m. at the auditorium of the Virginia Department of Transportation’s Lynchburg Office on Route 501 (Campbell Avenue) in Lynchburg.
