Two years ago, while driving back from a trade show, I stopped to use the facilities at a public rest area in Virginia. It was early evening and I was the only traveler in the bathroom. As I was washing my hands, a young, fairly large female attendant walked in and began spraying a disinfectant around the entire area. I asked the attendant to stop spraying and let her know that I had terrible allergies. She refused to acknowledge me and continued spraying. As I attempted to get out the door, she turned and intentionally sprayed the disinfectant directly into my face. Gasping for breath, I ran to my car and called the emergency number posted at the rest stop to report the incident.

While any time is the right time for preserving our valuable natural resources and for leaving a legacy of land for future generations, many people are asking if placing a conservation easement on their property is a wise financial decision in our current recession. Only your financial adviser can determine what is right for your particular circumstances, but here are some reasons why this is perhaps an opportune time to proceed with an easement.

The VUI oligarchy continues to ignore and minimize the negative impacts of uranium mining and milling. Equally disturbing is this industry’s ongoing attempts to errode our civil rights and the legislators who are allowing this travesty.

The recent Republican Attorney General’s opinion declaring that Pittsylvania County does not have the right to enact an ordinance banning uranium mining within its borders speaks volumes about how corrupt our political system has become.

In the next few months, most people will drive through a highway work zone. It may happen on the morning commute to the office or on a long trip to the beach. You’ll notice the orange cones, caution signs, large trucks and equipment and white hard hats. But, most likely, you won’t see the faces of the people who are working to make your commute better, safer and more efficient.

…I am writing this letter to urge you NOT to support President-Elect Obama’s choice for Secretary (Designate) of Agriculture. Gov. Tom Vilsack (D-Iowa), the President-Elect’s nominee, is the worst possible choice. In these hard economic times, small farmers are being hit harder than ever. Gov. Vilsack is a well-known supporter of Monsanto, Archer Daniels Midland and other large agribusinesses who, more than even McDonald’s and other fast-food franchises, are responsible for the health and obesity problems plaguing our country.

Bryan Baine is a very good friend of ours who is running for Town Counsel. We would like to see everyone get out and vote this year, it is your right! Some of the issues Bryan will address if elected would be to have open government, healthy economic development and will fight to keep the town separate from the county.
