Governor Timothy M. Kaine today announced that The Greater Lynchburg Transit Company (GLTC) has received the 2009 Outstanding Transit System Achievement Award from the American Public Transportation Association (APTA). This marks the second consecutive year that the APTA has recognized the quality of Virginia’s transit service at the national level with an Outstanding Transit System Achievement Award for a Virginia operator.

Winter sport enthusiasts have patiently polished up their skis and snowboards, awaiting the debut of Liberty University’s year-round ski slope. After nearly a year of anticipation, the wait is over. On Aug. 29, LU will hold a grand opening ceremony for the Liberty Mountain Snowflex Centre.

In August of 2009, the Town of Appomattox can take two things for granted. One, that Appomattox Courthouse Theatre is preparing for a new season of great plays including its current production, Neglected Husbands’ Sewing Club. And two, that the local community can enjoy these performances within the historic setting of the old Appomattox Courthouse.

Bennie Massey, pictured at left, turned 100 on Wednesday, July 22, 2009, and to help celebrate his centennial birthday the staff of the J. Robert Jamerson Memorial Library had a small surprise party for him including balloons and cake. Bennie drives himself to the library every Wednesday to pick out several paperback books and to “kill up an hour or two,” as he puts it.
