Appomattox is known for the Appomattox Courthouse National Historical Park. This is the site of General Robert E. Lee’s official surrender to General Ulysses S. Grant. This park is a great place to visit if someone is interested in history or life during that era. There are many battlefields and markers around the area.
There are other things to do in this area beyond those related to the Civil War. There are several nice golf courses in the area with great views of the Blue Ridge Mountains to the west. Appomattox is home to the Appomattox Courthouse Theater where one can see local productions of well-known shows as well as original performances.
Shopping in and around Appomattox is not limited to big box stores, antique stores abound in the region and there are enough shops to keep one busy all day. For a lunch break, stop in at one of the local favorites.
The Southern Virginia Wine Trail winds through the area. Pick a winery and enjoy a day of tasting and winery tours. In some cases, there is fine dining on site. A picnic lunch with local wine and lovely views is a perfect backdrop for the Appomattox visit!
