Ken Cuccinelli
On Saturday, 6 March 2010, The Washington Post broke a story on a letter sent from Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli II’s office to public colleges throughout the State of Virginia. In this letter, which has attorney-client privileged information, Cuccinelli urges the state’s public colleges and universities to rescind policies that ban discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation. The argument is that the schools’ boards of visitors have no legal authority to adopt such statements.
According to The Washington Post, Cuccinelli (R) wrote in the letter sent Thursday that only the General Assembly can extend legal protections to gay state employees, students and others — a move the legislature has repeatedly declined to take as recently as this week.
A call to the Attorney General’s office revealed that few if any staff members could respond to this letter. The Attorney General has not made a statement at this point on the circulation of this letter in the public domain.
