Barbara Parker and Janice Smith counting and mailing off pink lids collected by the library.
The “Pink Library Chicks,” which include library staff, and volunteers (including Dr. Barry Morris, the library’s director an honorary “Pink Chick”) have reached and surpassed their goal of collecting 200 pink lids off the Yoplait yogurt containers. The Chicks collected a total of 345 lids from the residents of Appomattox County.
These lids will be mailed off, and for every one turned in, Yoplait will donate .10 cents toward the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation to go toward breast cancer research. Except for Dr. Morris and one volunteer, the library is staffed by women. This is why breast cancer is an important issue for the Appomattox County Library System.
Janice Smith, a library employee, has a daughter who is a breast cancer survivor, and Barbara Parker, a library volunteer is a double breast cancer survivor. For the past six years, the library has made breast cancer awareness an issue and important subject. Each member of the library has done his or her share to promote the cause behind the pink ribbon.
We would like to thank everyone who has taken the time to bring in their pink lids and help the library surpass their goal. We look forward to next year’s collection and would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a happy and safe New Year’s holiday.
