The Appomattox County Library’s Summer Reading Programs are filled with lots of extra events; here is what was going on just last week alone: two story and craft times, a reading and meet and greet the book author Mary R. Bailey who wrote Vhan Zeely and the Time Prevaricators (which is available for check out), an artist camp, and painting sun catchers.
This is all a part of the “Be Creative @ Your Library” and “Express Yourself @ Your Libraryy” themes this year, part of the state-wide Summer Reading Program. It is not to late to sign up for either program and the more books you read, the more prizes you have a chance of earning.
Walter Hough will be at the Jamerson Library on July 23rd for two karate demonstrations, the first one will start at 1:00pm and the second one will start at 3:00pm. You must be registered to attend this event, as space is limited in the conference room. Mr. Hough is a fourth degree black belt Karate Master, who mixes Christian values with old world Japanese beliefs. This event is open to the whole family.
Pamplin Depot and the Jamerson Library are providing canvas squares for patrons 18 year of age and below to color with fabric markers. If you come in between July 20 – July 25 (while supplies last), you can decorate a square that will be added to our “Be Creative Quilt” that we will put together and put on display after the end of the Summer Reading Program.
Want a good book to read on vacation? How about picking out something off our book sale racks at the Jamerson Library. We have many titles starting at just $.50 cents each and you don’t have to worry losing them in the beach or pool. All proceeds from book sales go toward the purchase of new materials for both branches.
Jamerson Library continues to be host several community outreach programs, including collection boxes for St. Anne’s Food Bank, and AWAG’s pet food drive. We also have a box for local backyard gardeners to place their extra bounty and share with the public in a “Victory Garden” styled ‘give and take’ program. The library continues to see the importance of being a hub for the residents of Appomattox County and encourage patrons to share what they can during these times of economic hardship. We feel these programs are a positive influence and help better serve our small town.
The Pamplin Depot Library’s Book Club will be meeting on the second Wednesday of the month at noon in the community room of the Pamplin Depot, located on Main Street in Pamplin. The next one will be on August 12th, up for discussion will be the book, A Thousand Splendid Suns, by Khaled Hosseini. Soup and hot beverages are provided and everyone is welcome to attend and join in the discussion.
