“Be Creative @ Your Library” and “Express Yourself @ Your Library,” this years Summer Reading Program themes at the Appomattox County Library System are in full swing. As a part of the programs, Shelley Crichton, owner of Aaamazing Face Painting Balloons and More, came to the J. Robert Jamerson Memorial Library on July 10th to host an introduction to balloon art. With over a dozen participants for this event, there was a lot of laughter and fun as those who attended learned how to pump, twist, twirl and knot balloons into different animals and creative balloon hats. If you have not joined, it is not to late, there are still plenty of prizes to earn. Stop by either library to sign up.
On Thursday, July 16th, the Jamerson Library will be hosting three events. The first is “I Can Be An Artist Too!” an artist camp host by Jeannette Brady from the company “Joyful Noise” and teacher at the Appomattox Christian academy. The artists’ camp starts at 1:00pm for patrons’ PreK – 5 years of age, and the second artists’ camp starts at 3:00pm for patrons 6 – 9 years of age.
The third event starts at 6:00pm in the conference room of the Jamerson Library. The library staff will host Mary Bailey, a Rustburg English teacher and author of the book “Van Zeely and the Time Prevaricators,” for a reading and discussion of her book. Be sure to bring the whole family to join us at the library to hear about the adventures of Van Zeely in this young adult novel that would appeal to the whole family.
From July 20 – July 25 both libraries will pass out canvas squares (while supplies last) to individuals 18 years of age and below who wish to add their artistic talents to our “Creative Quilt.” We will supply fabric markers for patrons to make use of, decorate their squares and leave them at the library to be added to the quilt, which will be on display for several weeks at their respective libraries at the end of the Summer Reading Program. Due to the limited supplies, we cannot give these squares out to large groups such as day and school care programs. This project is open to individuals who patronize the library only.
The library system has a lot more activities planned all the way up through the first week of August, if you are interested in knowing what is going on stop by either library for a list of events, check our website, this online newspaper or the local printed paper for more information.
Both libraries order small book orders several times a month to keep a steady supply of current best sellers and other books available to the public. A large amount of DVD movies have been donated to both libraries and well be processed as soon as possible. You may check our online database at www.jrjml.org to browse either library’s full range of offerings that includes books, magazines, and VHS and DVD movies.
The Pamplin Depot Library’s Book Club will be meeting on the second Wednesday of the month at noon in the community room of the Pamplin Depot, located on Main Street in Pamplin. Soup and hot beverages are provided and everyone is welcome to attend and join in the discussion.
