Think Pink, Pamplin Depot Library, Jamerson Library
The Appomattox County Library Association is busy with many activities right now. The following list is inclusive, and we ask you to get involved with some of our many activities. Also, check Appomattox Calendar for upcoming library events!
- The Appomattox County Library association donated over 350 dollars worth of children’s books, biographies, CD operas, and young adult fiction. These will be added to the Jamerson Collection as soon as possible. The Library would like to thank them for their generous donation.
- With fall and winter on the way the libraries are planning and preparing the upcoming seasonal events and charitable programs, including the Central Virginia Area on Aging Agency’s senior citizen Angel tree, bedtime story and craft times, and other events.
- Jamerson Library continues to be host several community outreach programs, including collection boxes for St. Anne’s Food Bank, and AWAG’s pet food drive. The library continues to see the importance of being a hub for the residents of Appomattox County and encourage patrons to share what they can during these times of economic hardship. We feel these programs are a positive influence and help better serve our small town.
- It is “Think Pink @ Your Library” at the Appomattox County Library System. For six years, we have been collecting the pink caps off Yoplait yogurt containers to help support the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. This year the library has made an official team, the “Pink Library Chicks” with our director being an honorary “pink chick”. We ask patrons to bring in their clean pink caps and help the library raise money toward this important research. We will be collecting caps up through December 15th, 2009. The caps will be mailed off to Yoplait, who will donate .10 cents per cap to the Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. Our goal is to collect over 200 caps.
- Are you a part of a non-profit or civic organization and need a place to hold meetings? Both libraries have a public meeting you that you may book free of charge. These meeting rooms book early and are reserved on a first-come first-serve basis.
- We would like to remind patrons with overdue accounts by 90 plus days that we will be sending a list of these accounts to the County Treasurer’s department for off-set debt collection. The library gives several phones calls, a 30-day postcard, a 60-day letter, and a 90-day letter, once we have exhausted these forms of communication your account is turned over to the County, and if still no response about your overdue materials, you are turned over to off-set debt collections. We give patrons every possible opportunity to dispute accounts but once your account has been turned over to the County, it is out of our hands to resolve any issues.
- Jamerson Memorial Library has lots of books for sale starting as low as 50 cents each. This would be a great opportunity to stock up on some great titles. We are also making room for new-to-us VHS and DVD movies, and culling out some of our older selections, putting them up for sale as well.
- Both libraries continue to place small book orders often, so that we may keep a steady supply of the latest best sellers and other items. We encourage you to stop by either library or view our online catalog at www.jrjml.org.
- On October 22, 2009 the Jamerson Library will host the first of this fall and winter’s Bedtime Story and Craft Time, hosting book author Martha Hamlett, and her book “Bats in the Air, Bats in my Hair”. After the book reading, there will be a craft project and snacks provided by the library. Martha will have copies of her book for sale. This would be a great opportunity to pick up a signed copy of her book for the upcoming gift-giving season. This is a family style event, and everyone is encouraged to come dressed in pajamas!
- On Saturday, November 7, 2009, the “Friends of the Pamplin Library” will sponsor its annual chili cook-off. This event is open to all who are interested. Chili should be at the Pamplin Depot Library by 9:45, as judging begins at 10:00 A.M. (For more information, please call 434-547-7221.) Prizes will be awarded. Hamburgers, hot dogs, desserts, as well as bowls of chili will be available for purchase. All proceeds benefit the library at Pamplin, so come out and support a good cause, enjoy good food, and have a great day visiting with your neighbors.
- The Pamplin Depot Library Branch book discussion group meets on the second Wednesday at noon with soup and beverage provided. November 11th will be ‘bring a book’ of ones’ choice” to talk about as well as ideas for our next group of books for the next three months. The book group is looking into the possibility of having an evening discussion group and will be reading all of Jane Austin’s books. Anyone interested should call the Pamplin Library (248 – 9857) to have his or her name put on the list to be notified of our starting date, with this event to probable start just after the New Year.
