Technology grant will upgrade computers and software.
The Boys & Girls Club of Roanoke Valley has received a $25,000 technology grant from Cox Communications. The 9th Street Club in Roanoke has been selected to receive this technology grant because of the great need for updated computer equipment in the Club’s Teen Center in order to assist students with schoolwork and educational development. Through this gift, the 9th Street Club will be able to officially launch its new Cox Technology Center. The Center is expected to open in early 2010.
“We are happy to provide reliable telecommunications products and services to an organization that uses them to enrich the lives of young people. Cox truly believes in giving back to the communities it serves and we see no better way to do that than through youth and our partners with the Boys and Girls Club,” said Kim Stanley, Vice President of Operations for Cox Roanoke.
The “Cox Technology Center” computer lab will include:
- Ten wireless ready desktop computers with flat screen monitors
- One laser printer
- One wireless access router
- Various software, including installation of NetSmartz (a program developed by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children)
“There can be little argument that to achieve success today — and in the future — children must master and effectively utilize technology,” said Laurie Gibbons, Chief Professional Officer for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Roanoke. “We are thrilled to have Cox enhance the Teen Center with equipment that will change the lives and futures of hundreds of kids in our community.”
In addition, Cox Communications representatives will be on hand at the unveiling (date to be announced) to talk with kids about tips on how to safely navigate online.
To help bridge the digital divide, Cox provides free or discounted high-speed Internet and cable services to area Boys and Girls Clubs. Also, over the last five years, Cox has contributed thousands of dollars in cash and in-kind serves to many charities in the Roanoke Valley region.
