Carrie Brown
Glimmer Train Press recently announced that Carrie Brown, Sweet Briar College’s Margaret Banister Writer-in-Residence, is the first-place winner in its September Fiction Open competition.
Brown won for her short story “Bomb,” which will be published in the fall 2010 issue of Glimmer Train Stories. The first-place prize is $2,000.
“Bomb” is part of a collection in progress, “The Material World: A Novella and Other Stories,” Brown said. The story is about a girl who becomes separated from her parents while the family is traveling in Spain, and her encounter with a mysterious man in the cathedral in Valencia.
“I’m very pleased about the win,” she said. “The story is very long, so not easily publishable on its own, and Glimmer Train is a wonderful journal.”
Glimmer Train, which publishes quarterly, accepts original unpublished works from both established and new writers. Authors may submit works of fiction for standard publication or for any of several monthly competitions.
For more information, visit glimmertrain.com or go the writing guide page, which includes a monthly submission calendar.
Brown is the author of several novels and short story collections, including the award-winning novels “Confinement” and “The Hatbox Baby.” She teaches in Sweet Briar’s English and creative writing department.
