U.S. Department of Energy Secretary Steven Chu today announced up to $32 million in Recovery Act funding to modernize the existing hydropower infrastructure in the U.S., increase efficiency, and reduce environmental impact. Today’s announcement is designed to support the deployment of turbines and control technologies to increase power generation and environmental stewardship at existing non-federal hydroelectric facilities.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will hold a public meeting on possible revisions to the Definition of Solid Waste (DSW) rule on June 30, 2009 at the EPA Potomac Yards Conference Center in Arlington, Va. The hearing is an opportunity for stakeholders and members of the public to voice their opinions on the rule.

As part of its ongoing efforts to protect human health and the environment, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has posted a list of 44 “high hazard potential” impoundments containing coal combustion residuals, commonly referred to as coal ash, at 26 different coal burning electric utility facilities. EPA is releasing this information after interagency coordination with FEMA’s Risk Analysis Division Mitigation Directorate and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

As of July 1, 2009, the Alliance for Families and Children will become “The Family Alliance.” The name change is the result of a combined effort by the Board of Directors and staff members, as a part of 100th Anniversary celebrations for this non-profit, human service agency.

In Tom Perriello’s report to the Fifth District this week, he states, “Southside Virginia will be one of the winners under this bill, accelerating its ascendance to being the future energy capital of Virginia. In a carbon-constrained economy, we will see a resurgence of nuclear power.” While this statement appears to tout a promising future for Southside, the reality is that nuclear power is not “carbon-constrained.”

Governor Timothy M. Kaine today announced that the Virginia Department of Taxation has issued nearly 100 percent of state income tax refunds, putting money in the pockets of Virginians as the state continues to emerge from economic challenges. Even as some states struggle to issue refunds, Virginians have received more than 2.6 million refunds, totaling more than $1.6 billion, an increase of approximately 94,000 refunds and $215 million from 2008. The average value of refunds was $627.33, an increase of approximately 11 percent over 2008.

Last week, the U.S. House passed historic legislation to create millions of new jobs in the clean energy economy and increase our national security by reducing our dependence on foreign oil. I supported the American Clean Energy and Security Act because I believe it is a necessary step in declaring our energy independence and creating the energy jobs and technology of the future right here at home.

Governor Timothy M. Kaine today announced 162 grants worth more than $33 million have been awarded to support programs to improve criminal justice services throughout the Commonwealth. Fifty-six grants were supported by funds from the federal American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009. Appomattox and Lynchburg both are not listed as recipients, although funds for JJDP – Parent Child Nurturing Classes for CHINS Families in Campbell County will receive $21,675 in Federal Funds for their programs.

The U.S. Department of the Interior issued five exploratory leases on June 23 for wind power development off the coasts of Delaware and New Jersey. The first-ever federal leases for offshore wind power in the United States were awarded to Deepwater Wind, LLC; the Delaware and New Jersey subsidiaries of Bluewater Wind LLC; and the New Jersey subsidiary of Fishermen’s Energy LLC.
