The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will help ease Thanksgiving holiday travel by opening lanes temporarily closed for construction or maintenance work on major roadways. The lanes will be open from noon Wednesday, Nov. 26, until noon Friday, November 28. Long-term construction zones will remain in place.
VDOT’s traffic engineers have noted that average traffic volume on the interstate system is slightly lower this year than in 2007, but motorists should still expect to encounter some congestion during the holiday weekend.
VDOT is challenging motorists to do their part to help prevent highway fatalities by:
- Buckling up
- Avoiding distractions
- Sharing the road
- Obeying speed limits
- Driving drug-and-alcohol free
