Robert Jospé and Inner Rhythm at Sweet Briar Oct. 22
Musician Robert Jospé and his band, Inner Rhythm, will be at Sweet Briar College Oct. 22 for a master class and concert.
“World Beat Workshop,” a master class conducted by Jospe and percussionist Kevin Davis, will begin at 11:30 a.m. at Babcock Fine Arts Center Room 127. The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Memorial Chapel. Admission to both is free.
On their Web site, Jospé and Inner Rhythm describe themselves as a “high energy jazz and world-beat ensemble, performing original compositions rooted in jazz, Latin, Afro-Cuban and contemporary fusion styles, as well as jazz classics.”
The group performed at Sweet Briar several years ago. “[They] … were very well received,” Sweet Briar music professor Rebecca McCord said. “Their jazz styles include some elements of world music, which are part of most people’s aural repertoire. I love his performance style, too, which is accessible and entertaining.”
Jospé teaches jazz drumming at the University of Virginia, where he has been on the music faculty since 1989. He also plays with the U.Va. faculty jazz ensemble, the Free Bridge Quintet. He began his music career in New York City, where he was active for many years in the Big Apple’s jazz and rock scene.
Inner Rhythm is made up of Jeff Decker, Bob Hallahan, Randall Pharr and the aforementioned Davis. Vocalist Heather Maxwell of Charlottesville also is currently touring with the group.
