Jefferson Choral Society Begins 19th Season
The Jefferson Choral Society will begin rehearsals on Monday, September 8, marking the beginning of its 19th season. Singers interested in joining the chorus are invited to attend the first rehearsal and sample music that will be performed during the upcoming season. Rehearsals will be held at 7 p.m. at Forest Baptist Church, Rt. 221, Forest.
JCS will present four concerts this season: a Christmas concert, “Peace on Earth”; a Pops Concert, “Love Me Tender: Great Love Songs of the 20th Century”; a spring concert, “Requiem Mass in D Minor,” by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart; and “Moonlight Serenade,” a benefit concert for the D-Day Memorial in Bedford.
Aaron Garber will begin his second year as director of the chorus, and he is eager to begin the new season. “We are doing a variety of music that will appeal to singers and audiences alike,” he commented. “One of my goals this year is to increase membership in the chorus, and I am working with schools and churches to invite interested singers to give us a try,” he said. “Also, we are undertaking an outreach program for children and youth that we hope will give them the opportunity to sing works of the masters and provide an appreciation for great classical music.”
The Jefferson Choral Society attracts singers from throughout the Central Virginia area including Lynchburg and surrounding counties with singers ranging in age from high school and college to retirement. “This is one of the many things I love about the Choral Society,” remarked Lynn Kable, board president. “We have the opportunity to interact and perform with people of different age levels and backgrounds, and that adds so much to the singing experience.”
One of the most widely traveled vocal groups in Virginia, JCS has performed in the U.S. and abroad, having toured Europe five times. Most recently the chorus was invited to sing at Leeds Castle, Kent County, England for the British July 4, 2007 festivities celebrating the sailing of the three ships from Kent to Jamestown, VA in 1607. A concert tour for 2009 is now being planned.
