Acoustic Eidolon Plays Appomattox

Acoustic Eidolon, consisting of Hanna Alkire on cello and Joe Scott on guitar and double neck gitjo, performed at Baine’s Books and Coffee on Wednesday, May 14. This was the inaugural concert on the newly opened third floor of Baine’s and proved to be a big success. Acoustic Eidolon’s performance was co-sponsored by Baine’s Books and Coffee (http://www.Bainesbooks.com) and Rockcliffe Farm Retreat and Lodge (http://www.rockcliffefarm.com/default.htm).

The couple played an assortment of traditional Celtic tunes, bluegrass numbers, and original work along with the occasional homage to rock greats like Led Zeppelin. Between numbers Joe and Hanna took turns sharing bits of their musical philosophy and humor with the audience.

Hanna started out as a classical cello player at the age of eight. She had already been playing piano for four years. She comes from a musical family and grew up with the classics for bedtime music. This influence strongly colors her style.

Acoustic EidolonJoe started out playing the guitar but was steered towards the 5-string banjo by his father. He became very accomplished and played bluegrass for many years. It was his love of the 5-string banjo that led to his development of the double-neck Guitjo. This instrument combines characteristics of both the 6-string acoustic guitar and the 5-string banjo. Joe Scott is the only musician brave enough to tackle the Guitjo!

Hanna and Joe have been playing together since 1998 and married in 2001. They have produced numerous CDs together and their music has been featured on NPR’s “All Things Considered,” John Diliberto’s “Echoes,” PAX Television, and Woodsong’s “Olde Time Radio Hour,” Visit their website (http://www.acousticeidolon.com/frameset.html) for more information about the couple, their music, and their upcoming live appearances.
