ACHS Golf Team 3-0
The Appomattox County High School Golf team currently sits atop the Dogwood District standings in first place. The Raiders have started the season off with a perfect record of 3-0. Doug Marshall, the coach of the golf team, believes teamwork and consistency are essential components to having a successful season.
Teamwork is not usually associated with the game of golf. It is, in fact, one of the few sports where the individual competitor can solely control his or her own score. In High School golf, however, teamwork is essential. A win or loss is determined not by the individual golfers score, but by the culmination of all the golfers’ scores compared to that of their opponents.
The act of trying to emphasize the idea of teamwork into a sport dominated by individualism could be difficult, but Doug Marshall seems to have a coaching philosophy which is working well for his team. “You have to approach it with the idea that each player has to do their part. If they play their part as an individual and keep their stokes down as best as they can, we should be ok when they total the scores up as a group.”
In addition to teamwork, Coach Marshall also believes the team will flourish if they play consistently. Though the Raiders have won their first three games of the season, Marshall thinks his team can improve in this regard. “Everybody right now is playing around the same score, so we’re trying to be consistent. I won’t say that’s one of our strong points, but it’s definitely something we strive for.”
The three victories have nonetheless pleased Marshall, and he is happy with his team thus far. “We’re playing well as a group. There’s not one person I want to put out to the forefront, but all the guys right now are playing very good. ”
The next home game for the Raider Golf Team will be on Thursday, August 26th against Nelson County. The match will be played at 4:30 p.m. at Falling River Country Club.
