The Great American Road Trip: Adam Thompson
Some folks, however, will never have to look back. I learned—a couple days ago—about guitarist-songwriter Adam Thompson and his girlfriend Ammie Freymeyer’s rebellion against settling down too soon: they’re traveling across the U.S. of A. in an RV, with the goal of playing music in a small town (with populations under 2009) in every state over the next five months. Thompson calls the project Miles to Knowhere, and one of their stops just happens to be in Appomattox (at Baine’s Books & Coffee, Tuesday, November 25, 7:00 p.m.).
Let’s Talk Turkey
Thanksgiving, a uniquely American holiday, is Thursday. This is probably the only day of the year when just about everyone is eating turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, and cranberry sauce. If you are a turkey, it is a day marked in infamy, a dark day indeed.
Of Ceiling Fans, the Japanese and Other Related Items
We were shopping at Lowe’s the other night, and as we strolled through – actually, under – a huge ceiling fan display, I began wondering what would happen if all those fans were spinning at full speed while hordes of holiday shoppers were milling around underneath and then ALL THE FANS FELL DOWN AT ONCE! Imagine the horror, the carnage…oh, the humanity!

A portion of Route 47 that was closed earlier in Charlotte County has reopened. Route 47 near Route 1205 was closed due to a downed power pole and motorists were being detoured around the scene. The power pole has been replaced and power restored to the area. Detours that were in place for passenger vehicles and tractor-trailers have been removed.

Fishwood Farm for the Holidays
Emotions often run high during the holiday season, and this year seems to be even more stressful because of the economy. If you have a household full of company for Thanksgiving, don’t send them to the basement to get them out of your hair. Instead, take the whole family to Fishwood Farms, located mid-way between Appomattox and Lynchburg, so you can enjoy the great outdoors along with some beautiful alpacas.
Jacob Lawrence, Story Painter
Since his first published print in 1963, Jacob Lawrence produced a body of prints that is both highly dramatic and intensely personal. In his graphic work, as in his paintings, Lawrence turned to the lessons of history and to his own experience. From depictions of civil rights confrontations to scenes of daily life, these images [...]
